Ambassador George Glass hosts a reception for Portuguese Fulbright grantees

Ambassador and Mrs. Glass hosted the 2019 Fulbright reception at their residence on Wednesday, July 24. Close to one hundred guests, including the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, gathered to celebrate the 35 Portuguese grantees preparing to study in the United States. They were selected for the program last year and will travel to the United States this year.

During the event, the Ambassador delivered remarks to congratulate the grantees and emphasize the long-term value of this exchange. He affirmed, “Senator William Fulbright once said the Fulbright program would ‘bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs,’ and make no mistake – this opportunity can create a sea of goodwill on both sides of the Atlantic, anchoring this U.S.-Portuguese relationship.”

The Fulbright program is the flagship educational exchange of the U.S. Department of State, managed in Portugal collaboratively by the Fulbright Commission and the U.S. Embassy. Next year, the Fulbright Commission in Portugal will celebrate its 60th anniversary.
