Chargé d’Affaires Herro Mustafa talks about her life’s story

Chargé Mustafa with students at Alverca school.

On March 28, 2017, Herro Mustafa, the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, visited Escola do Bom Sucesso in Alverca following a request by one of the students who had met Ms. Mustafa and been inspired by her story.

Ms. Mustafa presented on her experience of being a refugee to the United States as child from Kurdistan, Iraq.  Ms. Mustafa presented on eight lessons for young people to carry with them.   The students had lots of questions and were excited to speak with the Chargé about her life and experiences as an American diplomat.  The excellent questions continued after the session as students snapped selfies and took group photos before enjoying  a table full of different homemade cookies and a beautiful chocolate cake made especially for the occasion by one of the parents.

The Embassy provided small mementos for the students and the school library received a collection of books about the United States that will be available to students. The U.S. Embassy seeks to support Portuguese public schools’ English teaching efforts by providing books in English.
