In partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, the American Corners in Portugal welcomed Professor Christopher Emdin, the co-creator of the #HipHopEd media movement and the author of the recently released, award-winning book Urban Science Education for the Hip Hop Generation. Currently an Associated Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University, Dr. Emdin was in Portugal between July 11 and 16 to give a series of talks in Porto, Aveiro and Lisbon.
While in Porto and Aveiro he spoke mostly to high school students. In Lisbon, as an invited speaker he participated in the National Meeting of the Portuguese Math Association and shared with the Portuguese high school teachers his engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.
Being a natural communicator and showing his true passion of teaching, Professor Emdin naturally engaged the Portuguese audiences and pleasantly surprised with his new approach to the teaching of STEM, namely the use of Hip Hop as a mean to make it more appealing to a younger and broader audience.
