Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Lisbon, Portugal February 3, 2024

Location: Largo do Intendente and Martim Moniz Square area

Event: Media reporting indicates that there are two demonstrations planned for downtown Lisbon on Saturday, February 3:

  • 4:00pm in the Largo do Intendente area, which is being billed as an ‘anti-racist collective gathering.’
  • 6:00pm in the area around Martim Moniz Square, which is being organized by the Partido Nacional Renovador (PNR) and will demonstrate “Against the Islamization of Europe.”

There is a potential for conflict between these two different groups and for other counter-protests in the area.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid large crowds and demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Maintain good situational awareness and remain actively aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
  • Follow the instructions of authorities and road signs regarding closures and detours.
  • For an emergency, call the Europe-wide emergency number: 112.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.
