Ambassador Sherman will depart Lisbon on January 20, 2017, as is customary for all political ambassadors upon the beginning of a new U.S. administration. Deputy Chief of Mission Herro Mustafa will assume duties as Chargé d’Affaires until a new ambassador is appointed and arrives into Lisbon.
Reflecting on his almost three years in Portugal, Ambassador Sherman expressed that “It has been a profound honor and extreme pleasure to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to this great country. Kim and I are sad to leave, but take great satisfaction in the work we did to strengthen U.S.-Portuguese ties. We are also grateful for the many wonderful friends we made here. We leave knowing that Portugal will forever be in our souls, and the Portuguese people will remain deep in our hearts.”
