In November 2014 the U.S. Embassy in Portugal accepted a donation of more than 6,000 used books. The Embassy worked with the American Embassy in Mozambique to distribute most of the books to Maputo public schools.

Still, there were many books that were either in poor condition or were out of date and not wanted by libraries or schools. The Embassy coordinated with Banco Alimentar to deliver nearly 2 tons of books which will be recycled and earn Banco Alimentar enough to purchase more than 300 liters of milk which will be distributed to those in need.
