To promote the Mission’s citizen security and environmental cooperation goals, the Embassy launched a 22-day #ReforestationNation campaign leading up to Earth Day on April 22, using social media, cultural events, and educational outreach.
The purpose of the campaign was to highlight the importance of reforestation, express sympathy and solidarity with communities still in recovery after wildfires, and celebrate the U.S.-Portugal friendship. During 21 visits to NGOs, institutes, schools, town halls, and volunteer organizations, Embassy officers learned about each organization’s reforestation efforts, as well as obtained a better understanding of existing challenges and future opportunities for collaboration. Embassy officials also planted 22 friendship trees, donated by the Navigator Company, helping us establish new relationships with political, NGO, and academic contacts in the north and the interior of Portugal.
