
On June 6, Ambassador Sherman participated in the award ceremony of the first edition of the “FCT-NOVA Challenge” on the campus of FCT-Nova University. The Embassy was a sponsor for this national competition which sought to increase secondary school students’ interest science and engineering. The competition also promoted engagement between students, teachers and researchers. A total of 58 projects authored by students and coordinated by their teachers were submitted.
The event opened with remarks by NOVA FCT Dean, Professor Fernando Santana, Secretary of State for Education, Professor João Costa, Professor Antonio Rendas, Rector of the University NOVA of Lisbon, and the U.S. Ambassador, Robert Sherman. The students who developed the twelve projects selected by the jury as finalists all presented their projects before awards were presented. Prizes included up to 5,000 Euros and a trip to the U.S. to visit NASA.
