MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT BIDEN TO PRESIDENT MARCELO REBELO DE SOUSA
JUNE 10, 2023
Dear Mr. President:
On behalf of the people of the United States, I send our best wishes to you and the people of Portugal as you celebrate the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.
The centuries-long partnership between Portugal and the United States has helped strengthen peace and stability around the globe, including as NATO Allies. We have stepped up to address global challenges, like climate change and stewardship of the world’s oceans. We have worked closely together to advance democracy, respect for human rights, and rule of law. And we are continuing to stand up for our shared values—including by standing with the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their sovereignty and liberty against Russia’s brutal assault.
In the year ahead, I look forward to deepening the cooperation between our countries—and the ties between our people—even further as we continue to forge a better future for Portugal, the United States, and the world.
Sincerely,
Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
