Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory Macris is formally the U.S. Embassy Lisbon’s Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs. He came to Lisbon after serving two years as Deputy Director in the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Western European Affairs (EUR/WE), whose area of responsibility includes Portugal and 14 other European nations. Greg is a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Foreign Service. Prior foreign assignments include a consular tour in the Dominican Republic; political assignments in Spain, Ecuador, and Cyprus; and leading a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Parwan, Afghanistan. Domestically, in addition to EUR/WE, he has served two tours in the State Department’s Operations Center and as a Staff Assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.
Greg is a 2012 distinguished graduate of the National War College and holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from James Madison University. He is the recipient of six Department Superior Honor Awards, the 2012 Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Strategic Writing Award, and the 2007 Sinclaire Award for hard language study. He speaks Portuguese, Greek, and Spanish and some German.
A native of Washington, DC, Greg is married and is a father to three children, two residing in Lisbon and one in Virginia. His pastimes include automobiles, travel, and golf.
