Peace Officers Memorial Day at U.S. Embassy Lisbon

Over 50 runners joined Ambassador Glass in the ‘Fun Run’

In honor of fallen Department of State and Portuguese security and law enforcement personnel, Regional Security Office Lisbon hosted a Peace Officers Memorial Day gathering on May 15, which featured participation by U.S. Ambassador to Portugal George E. Glass, a friendly ‘Fun Run’ competition, and a cookout. Ambassador Glass kicked off the event by welcoming guests and conducting a moment of silence for all who had made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others.

Over 50 runners joined Ambassador Glass in the ‘Fun Run’, including members of the greater Embassy community, Marine Security Guard Detachment, Local Guard Force, and partners from Lisbon’s firefighter regiment (RSB) and Portugal’s main criminal police bodies: public (PSP), gendarmerie (GNR), and immigration (SEF). Competing teams ran a hilly half-mile circuit around the north side of Embassy Lisbon’s compound, along the way surmounting 156 total ladder rungs, body dips, push-ups, and sit-ups—one exercise repetition for each name inscribed on the Diplomatic Security (DS) Memorial at DS Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.
