The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives John Boehner accompanied by a congressional delegation was in Portugal between April 17 and 20. Boehner was received with honors at the Portuguese parliament by the speaker Assunção Esteves and met with members of several parliamentarian committees. Meetings with Portuguese Prime Minister Passos Coelho, Vice-Prime Minister Portas and Foreign Minister Machete were also on his agenda.
The congressional delegation visited the pilgrimage site of Fatima in central Portugal as well as the historic city of Sintra outside of Lisbon. During the visit, the delegation interacted with local people, clergy and lay people at the pilgrimage site.
