The U.S. Embassy, in conjunction with the Association of Portuguese English Teachers (APPI) and the Fulbright Commission in Portugal, hosted English Spelling Bee competitions for teams of 9th and 10th graders from public schools around the country. Regional Spelling Bees were held in Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo, Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Setúbal, Lisboa, Madeira, Faro, and Guarda districts.

On May 8, the Deputy Chief of Mission hosted a reception in honor of the regional spelling bee champions and event partners. The next day, on May 9, the final Spelling Bee competition was held at the American Corner at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) with 71 finalists from all regional events. Parents were also invited to the event along with the teachers, with over 230 in total attendance. Seven finalists were challenged to provide as many long words and then as many words spelled the same in English and Portuguese. Francisco Silva, a 10th grade student from Escola Secundária Madeira Torres, won the first prize and will be flying to Boston, courtesy of SATA Portugal. The second prize went to António Rosa, a 9th grade student, from Escola Secundária de Beja, prize awarded by the U.S. Embassy. The third prize went to Carlos Fernandes, a 10th grade student, from Escola Secundária Senhora da Hora, prize awarded by the U.S. Embassy.
