I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Frank Carlucci today. He was an icon of American foreign policy. He was a patriot, a problem solver, and a visionary. He was remarkable.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this time. He will be deeply missed.
Here in Portugal Frank Carlucci’s legacy endures. His work with Mario Soares, another titan of history, is still legendary. Together, their efforts in support of Portugal during its revolution, and their commitment to Portugal’s future as a democracy changed the course of history. It also set the stage for the great friendship our countries continue to enjoy today. The U.S.-Portugal relationship has only continued to deepen since then.
Today I hosted a conference, “The United States and Portugal: A Partnership for Prosperity.” This partnership exists in large part because of the efforts of Frank Carlucci. During my time in Portugal, I am committed to continuing his work to build strong ties across the Atlantic, and to forge new connections with both the government and the people of Portugal.
