On January 8, 2018, POL/ECON Officer, Roshni Nirody welcomed a group of students from Agrupamento de Escolas do Fundão to U.S. Embassy, Lisbon. This group of 14 12th graders came to the Embassy to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Ms. Nirody explained her work at the Embassy as a Political Officer, as well as her personal history before discussing MLK and the Civil Rights Movement. English Teacher, Luís Nunes, commented that he appreciated this opportunity for his students to travel from Fundão, in the interior of Portugal, to Lisbon to participate in this program and learn about this important moment in U.S. History.
During the Q&A period students asked excellent questions often relating what they had heard to moments in Portuguese history. The Embassy provided additional resource materials to the teachers so students could continue learning about MLK and the Civil Rights Movement.
