Event:The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the National Hurricane Center report that Hurricane Lorenzo is expected to bring hurricane and tropical storm force winds, rain and large and dangerous waves to the Azores beginning tonight. These conditions will continue into Wednesday, October 2. While all the islands will be affected, IPMA projects that the western islands (Flores and Corvo) and central islands (Terceira, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, and Graciosa) will be most affected. A state of emergency will be activated at 8pm local time on Tuesday, October 1 for all the islands. The Regional Government of the Azores has closed schools and non-essential government services in the western and central islands for Wednesday, October 2. Ports in the islands of Faial, Sao Jorge, Pico, Corvo and Flores will be closed starting this evening.
